Evaluating Sources Library Workshop

Step Three: Expert Evaluator

Nice job! You're almost done! Now it's time to apply what you've learned. Let's evaluate two sources that pertain to our Myer's Briggs Test example using the CRAAP test. Start with Source #1 in this tab and switch to Source #2 using the tab above.

Start by opening this source: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newCDV_51.htm

Let's talk about authority. It looks like this article was authored by a group called "Mind Tools Content Team."

Okay, let's examine this source for accuracy. We might not be experts ourselves in this area, so it can help to look for surface level clues.

Great! So the authors cited outside sources. However ...

Great work! The last thing we want to do is consider the purpose of this source.

Excellent work! Now use the tab above to evaluate Source #2 ...

Okay, let's take a look at a source more like the ones you will often find in the library's databases.

Use the link to open the source: http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.3102/00346543063004467. You may need to download the PDF. Skim through the abstract, first paragraph, and conclusion before answering the questions below.

Is this an authoritative source? Let's take a closer look to find out.

Okay, one last question! Just as with source one, we need to consider the purpose of this source.

Wonderful work! Before you leave, consider the following:

  • Based on this evidence, should I rely on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to tell me about my personality? If not, where would I look for more reliable personality tests?
  • Has your own opinion about the test changed? Remember, having an open mind based on new evidence is a really good thing!
  • What additional information might you want before making a decision about the reliability of the MBTI?

Thanks for completing this short workshop and hopefully you feel more confident evaluating sources you encounter during your research!
