Start with the CMA Publications Index. Search for pieces by a particular artist. If you also know the title of a piece that you want to research, you can add that information. This will give you the CMA Object Number--an inventory number for that particular piece in the CMA collection. It will also take you to citations for the Cleveland Museum of Art Bulletin which you will need to find in the Library's print periodicals on the fourth floor. These articles will give you extensive information about the artist and the particular piece of art. The Cleveland Museum of Art Bulletin is also available on JSTOR for 1914-1994.
