PSC 111: American Government

Search Tips

Review the assignment instructions/rubric to help you develop a list of keywords/search terms. Include synonyms and related terms.

You must choose ONE foundational U.S. document that you are going to be researching. You must pick from one of the following foundational documents in American government below:
• The U.S. Constitution
• The Declaration of Independence
• The Federalist Papers (Select a specific paper like Federalist No. 10 or No. 51)
• The Articles of Confederation
• The Bill of Rights
• Emancipation Proclamation

When searching for information about your foundational U.S. document and its impact, you can use keywords like: analysis, commentary, critical, criticism, debate, economy, economic, historical, history, impact, importance, influence, interpretation, legacy, politics, political, relevance, significance, social, society, themes.

Search on different keywords and combinations of terms to find information.

*Experiment with the Boolean operators AND, OR to combine search terms, especially when using a library database. For example:

Articles of Confederation AND impact

U.S. Constitution AND themes

Declaration of Independence AND analysis

United States AND Bill of Rights AND significance

Federalist No. 51 AND power

Try NESTING your search terms by using both AND & OR in a search statement:

Emancipation Proclamation AND (impact OR importance OR influence OR significance)

(United States Constitution OR U.S. Constitution) AND (history OR historical)
