MSL Sustainabili-Tea Swap: Sustainability & Recycling Resources

Resources for Disposing of Items

Pass It On: Resource-Full Guide to Donating Usable Stuff

Zero Waste Hacks

Tips for Reducing Waste

Reduce

  • Before buying something, ask: "Do I really need this?" and "Would something I already own fulfill my need?".
  • Intentionally purchase items that are durable and can be used for a long time.
  • Consider what will happen to items that you buy when you are done using them. Choose materials that can be more responsibly disposed of.

Reuse

  • Join a Buy Nothing group or set up a swap with friends, family, or coworkers.
  • Shop second-hand at thrift stores, online second-hand locations, Goodwill, etc.
  • Fix items rather than throwing them away and buying new ones.

Recycle

  • If you must dispose of something, determine if it can be recycled
  • Avoid "wish-cycling", or adding items to the recycling that are not actually recyclable. This can bog down the system and make recycling programs less effective.
  • "Up-cycle" items by finding creative ways to use them that may not match their original purpose (e.g., making old CDs into decorative wall hangings, turning an old t-shirt into a bag, etc.).

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in Action

  • Visit bulk grocery stores and fill up sanitized old jars.
  • Avoid single use items like plastic silverware, cups, and shopping bags; take reusable options with you instead.
  • Save shipping boxes to reuse when you have something to send or for gifts.
  • Borrow or rent items that you use infrequently, such as power tools and outdoor equipment.
  • Maintain your appliances, furniture, car, etc. so you won't have to replace them as quickly.
  • Use rechargeable batteries.
  • Visit rummage and estate sales to look for second-hand items.
  • Make homemade gifts, decorations, etc. when possible, rather than buying them new.
  • Use old clothing as rags.
  • Avoid styrofoam packaging, as it very rarely can be recycled.
  • Buy larger economy-sized non-perishable items instead of individually wrapped items.
  • Look for products with the least amount of packaging.
  • Purchase products made out of recycled materials to close the loop.
  • Consider the 3 day rule -- before buying something new, wait three days. If you still feel you really need the item, proceed with buying it.

Benefits of Reducing Waste

  • Protects human health by reducing dangerous chemicals and microplastics in the environment.
  • Protects environment (including all aspects of ecosystems) from damage and contamination, which often impacts human health and economies
  • Reduces use of fossil fuels in the creation and disposal of materials, which has an impact on climate change
  • Reduces need for future generations to deal with our garbage
  • Encourages resourcefulness and creativity, as well as a greater appreciation for one's belongings
