Join us right here at Cleveland State for our third annual OpenCon Cleveland event, back by popular demand! At this event we'll celebrate and explore open education and open access with speakers, panels, and activities. Anyone interested in Open Education is welcome: faculty, librarians, library staff, instructional designers, and students.

Constitution Day is September 17th

Join us on September 17th for a thought-provoking special presentation by CSU Law professor Reginald Oh, and stop by the first floor of the library to see our book display celebrating this important holiday.This is just one of our series of Democracy 101 events this election season! Connect with Faculty Series:"To Form a More Loving (Perfect) Union: Love as a Principle of Democracy, Free Speech, and Racial Equality" Professor Reginald Oh, CSU College of LawTuesday, September 17th11:30-12:30Michael Schwartz Library Connection Lounge (1st Floor, west of the front desk)This presentation will explain that love is perhaps the most important constitutional principle of democracy. Love is implied in key parts of the Constitution: the Preamble, the Bill of Rights, and the Fourteenth Amendment. Love is the constitutional glue that can transform a divided nation of us versus them into We the People. The presentation will discuss how love informed Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court decision that struck down racial segregation in public schools in 1954. In Memoriam Ann Marie Smeraldi

As many of you in our campus community have heard by now, our Interim Director, colleague, and friend Ann Marie Smeraldi passed away on Monday, September 2nd. During her 16-year career at CSU, Ann Marie served as a reference librarian, head of public services, assistant director, and as interim director of the Michael Schwartz Library.Motivated by her belief in the vital role libraries play in shaping student success, she was deeply committed to her work as a first-year experience librarian. Throughout her career, she provided guidance and support to first-year students as they navigated their transition to university life, ensuring that new CSU students felt ready for higher education and were aware that the library and its staff were always there to assist them.CSU President Laura Bloomberg wrote:"While her leadership was instrumental in creating a library environment where students felt comfortable and supported, her legacy extends well beyond her professional achievements; her kindness, dedication and passion touched the lives of countless people. She will be remembered as both a mentor and a friend, always willing to lend a helping hand and share her wisdom."We are deeply grateful to our colleagues across campus who have reached out with condolences and shared heartfelt stories about Ann Marie. She was a caring and inspiring leader, whose wisdom, enthusiasm, and compassion guided a generation of college students and enriched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to work with her.
