Introduction to the Information Studies Profession - Development of Marketable Skills
The student selected for this position will receive a broad introduction to the information studies profession—its purpose, value, and expertise. They will be paired with a mentor to gain valuable knowledge in the field and develop marketable skills that are extendable to a variety of career disciplines. The program provides experiential learning, valuable training, and support within a professional and structured work environment, while creating a networking opportunity for current and former program participants. Applicants do not have to be considering a career in librarianship.

The program offers students a unique, paid opportunity in academic libraries not available in traditional positions or part-time campus employment.
As a paid, resume-building position offering hands-on experience, the OhioLINK Luminaries receive broad introduction to the information studies profession—its purpose, value, and expertise. Students are paired with a mentor to gain valuable knowledge in the field and develop marketable skills that are extendable to a variety of career disciplines. The program provides experiential learning, valuable training, and support within a professional and structured work environment, while creating a networking opportunity for current and former program participants.
The program, established by seven OhioLINK institutions in 2017, continues to add students and institutions, develop outreach materials, bolster professional development opportunities and training activities for students, mentors, and library administrators, and engage the support of private companies that serve libraries. The program aims to introduce student participants to a broad range of LIS work, not just the most visible patron services jobs. It also will facilitate supportive cohort relationships between participating deans and directors, mentors, and students.
The program’s success is enhanced by several unique elements: it exposes students to a wide range of LIS work experiences; it creates a support system for students, mentors, and library administrators; it supports the library work environment becoming more inclusive; and Ohio plays a key role because the program recognizes that Ohio students would be more inclined to consider attending a library program and establish their LIS career in the state.
