The Michael Schwartz Library is happy to announce our two inaugural library champions!

Library champions are nominated by library staff member and chosen based on these criteria:

  • faculty member was observed promoting the library to colleagues, students, or administrators and/or
  • faculty member has collaborated successfully with librarians or library staff to improve student learning and/or research

Dr. Stephanie Brooks
Stephanie Brooks
Dean of the College of Health

Why she was nominated: “Dean Brooks initiated a meeting with the Health Professions Librarian and two Associate Deans. The four discussed ways the library can and should be involved in student learning, faculty research, and program accreditation. She also invited the librarian to a College of Health cabinet meeting to present to and converse with COH directors and department chairs. Dean Brooks' eagerness to integrate the library into the academic life of the newly-formed College of Health will undoubtedly foster more library instruction opportunities and more open and frequent communication with COH faculty, resulting in more meaningful support for students.”

Dean Brooks’s response: “The library is often an invisible office in our educational institutions. As a community of scholars, it is imperative to understand how to utilize its resources, especially our dedicated librarians.”

Stephen Cory

Dr. Stephen Cory
Department of History Chair

Why he was nominated: “Dr. Cory always invites the history librarian to speak to his classes, giving the librarian crucial access to students for information literacy instruction. During class, he actively encourages students to use the library and reach out to the librarian for help, and this kind of advocacy is more valuable than any promotion the library itself can offer. He also actively participates in programs offered by the library, such as the Textbook Affordability Grant and the CSU Writing Club."

Dr. Cory’s response: “I very much appreciate how involved the library staff are in supporting our faculty, students and programs, and especially the fact that you do it with such limited funds!   Your leadership on OERs and other initiatives to make textbooks more affordable is also much appreciated. Student-centered services such as your workshops on avoiding plagiarism or on finding sources for research papers, online chats with librarians, research guides, reference librarians, study cubicles, late night hours during finals week and other such services are valuable resources to help our students succeed. The weekly Writing Club meetings led by Mandi and Mary help keep me accountable to be more consistent in my academic writing and Mary's summaries of books on academic writing provide useful ideas for improving my writing techniques and practices.  Thank you for all you do!”

Thank you to Stephen, Stephanie, and to all our faculty for supporting the library and being such wonderful collaborators!
