A guide to using the free online citation manager Mendeley.

Adding PDFs to Your Library

There are the two ways to add documents to Mendeley Reference Manager:

  1. add docs (in the upper left corner) → Import Document or Add File → Open
  2. Drag and drop PDFs into Mendeley.

Keep in mind that you can drag and drop multiple files into your library, or even an entire folder.

Importing References from the Web

  1. Install the Web Importer in your browser's bookmark toolbar
  2. Locate a reference through one of the library's resources or the web.
  3. Click the small Mendeley icon Mendeley Icon on your browser to add the source to your Mendeley library.</span></span></li> </ol> <p style=" />This imports the reference directly to your online library. To see references imported from the web in your Desktop library, click Sync Library and they will visible in both places.

Double-Checking References

As with any machine that creates references for you, the creation process is not an exact science. It's important that you check all references before using them in your paper or project, especially ones that have this symbol next to them.

In Mendeley Desktop:

  1. To the right of the selected reference are the Details.
  2. Check to see if the information is correct. If it isn't, correct it.
  3. Click Search by Title.
  4. If this doesn't retrieve the correct information click on the appropriate fields and fill in the correct information.
  5. When everything is correct click Details are Correct.
