Catalogs

Auction Catalogs are used mostly by galleries that sell art and by museums who purchase art for their collections. They are also very useful for curators who track provenance or investigate art attributions.

*Find auction catalogs by doing an advanced search for the auction house name (ex.Sotheby's (Firm) or Christie, Manson & Woods International Inc) in the Author field.

A Catalogue Raisonné is the published catalog of an artist's entire oeuvre, or portions of it by medium or chronology. They are essential to find provenance, chronologies, physical descriptions, illustrations, related bibliography, and basic scholarship concerning a particular piece of art or an artist's complete body of work.

*Find catalogue raisonnés in Scholar by searching for [artist's name] in the author field.

Exhibition Catalogs are books that describe a temporary exhibition within a museum or art gallery. These catalogs contain images and detailed descriptions of the pieces within the exhibit.

*Find exhibition catalogs in Scholar by doing a keyword search for [your search terms] AND catalog.
