ebooks @ CSU Research Guide: JSTOR Books

This research guide provides information about accessing and using the eBook collections available at the Michael Schwartz Library.

JSTOR Books

The library purchases and makes available some ebooks through JSTOR. Most of JSTOR's ebooks available through the library are published by academic presses.

How to use JSTOR Books

Search

Searching for books can be done by using the default search bar.

After entering the search and viewing the results, choose the "Books" tab to view the books included in the search results.

Advanced Search

You may also choose to do an advanced search. Click "Advanced Search" on the JSTOR home screen, or the "Search" button at the top of the JSTOR window. In the advanced search view, enter your search terms, and under "Narrow By," check "Book" under Item Type. Make sure the "Include only content I can access" box is checked. Click Search.

After you have completed a search, your results will display like this:

Results for the most part will be individual book chapters where your search terms appear. Clicking on the chapter title or "Read Online" will take you to view the chapter in your browser. Clicking on the book title aside "From" will take you to a brief description of the book and table of contents.

When you click on a search result to open a book chapter you will see the chapter title displayed like this:

You may click the underlined book title to navigate to the book page, or you may use the table of contents on the right side of the screen (not pictured) to navigate to other chapters.

The viewer itself will look like this:

You may zoom in and out, scroll through the chapter, and search within the text. JSTOR content restrictions may prevent you from copying text or printing.

The in-browser viewer uses a plugin called "FileOpen". This viewer should work seamlessly with your browser's Flash plugin, but you may need to follow these instructions for installation to use "Online PDF", located at the bottom of the JSTOR viewer page.
