Mandel Continuing Scholar Summer Seminar

A guide for students completing research in the Mandel Continuing Scholars program.

Get to Know Your Topic

Students often research and write about topics that are unfamiliar to them.  Gathering background information on your topic from reference sources will help you understand and focus your topic.  Background information will help you identify key concepts and search terms.

General and specialized encyclopedias are a great place to start.

The following research database provide excellent overviews of various social issues and topics.

You will need a Libray PIN to access these databases from off-campus.

    Wikipedia: Beneath the Surface

What about Wikipedia? Wikipedia is best used as a starting point.  It can help you better understand your topic and prepare you for locating books, articles, and other sources to use in your paper. Wikipedia should never be the only source you consult.
